It was anticipated. Enthusiasts of high-performance Mercedes-Benz vehicles in the stylish two-door form now have something new. The Mercedes-AMG GT63 S E Performance coupe has arrived, and early signs indicate it lives up to expectations.
For those acquainted with Mercedes-AMG, E Performance signifies hybrid technology. The top-of-the-line GT now boasts 805 horsepower from a twin-turbocharged 4.0-litre V-8 at the front and an electric motor at the rear.
The gasoline burner by itself contributes 603 hp, with a standout 1,047 pound-feet of combined torque. The AMG GT63 S E Performance achieves 60 mph in a blistering 2.7 seconds, outpacing many supercars. Despite its larger size and extra seating, it claims the title of the fastest-accelerating AMG production model.
Although technically a plug-in hybrid, efficiency takes a back seat. The battery capacity is merely 6.1 kWh, with no mention of the electric-only range. Mercedes prioritises performance, optimising the battery temperature for maximum power output. Charging options include plug-in or driver-selectable recuperation settings, featuring a one-pedal mode reminiscent of EVs.
Mercedes-AMG employs a nine-speed dual-clutch transmission to distribute power via the 4Matic+ all-wheel-drive system. Normally, the electric motor propels the rear axle, but it can redirect power upfront upon detecting slip. This setup includes rear-axle steering, AMG Active Ride Control suspension with roll stabilization, and carbon ceramic brakes. At the front, six-piston calipers grasp 16.5-inch rotors behind 20-inch wheels, while the rear features 15-inch rotors with single-piston calipers. Optional wheel sizes extend up to 21 inches.
To the naked eye, distinguishing the E Performance variant from the regular AMG GT63 is quite the challenge unless you inspect it closely. Mercedes incorporates unique badging on the trunk lid and discreetly places a charging port on the rear fascia. Unnoticed are modifications to the active aerodynamics system, tailored for optimal performance with the hybrid powertrain. Inside the 2+2 cabin, it’s typical Mercedes-AMG fare, ensuring a comfortable experience.
The pricing for the 2025 Mercedes-AMG GT63 S E Performance coupe will be disclosed nearer to its availability in late 2024.
