Porsche has electrified its popular Macan model, revealing the Macan 4 with 402 horsepower and the Macan Turbo with 630 hp. The second-gen Macan shares a platform with Audi, known as Premium Platform Electric (PPE), featuring an 800-volt architecture. This tech, first seen in the Taycan, enables faster charging and reduced copper usage.

The 95 kWh battery utilizes Lithium-Nickel Manganese Cobalt cells and supports rapid charging at up to 270 kW with an 800-volt DC charger. Additionally, plugging into a 400-volt charger allows parallel charging, significantly decreasing charge times.

Second-generation Macan EV Overview

Powertrain

The Macan 4 and Macan Turbo feature permanent-magnet synchronous motors at each axle. In the Macan 4, the motors yield 402 hp and 479 lb-ft, while the Turbo boasts 630 hp and 833 lb-ft with “overboost.” Both achieve impressive acceleration: the Macan 4 hits 0-60 mph in 4.9 seconds, the Turbo in 3.1 seconds. Top speeds are 136 and 161 mph, respectively.

The rear motor’s unique 180-degree rotation ensures a rear-biased weight distribution, and its single-speed design aids efficiency by eliminating the need for a multi-speed transmission.

The upcoming Macan EV, akin to the Taycan, lacks a one-pedal drive but excels in regenerative braking via the brake pedal, capable of regenerating up to 240 kW during braking. Specifics on the EPA range remain undisclosed. Its suspension features multi-links front and rear, resembling a double-wishbone setup with a split upper wishbone for an extended steering axis.

Both variants boast air springs and Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM). Notably, a novel rear-wheel steering system is optional, offering up to five degrees of movement for enhanced low-speed maneuvering and high-speed stability.

Exterior

The new Porsche Macan maintains the brand’s evolutionary design approach with its signature coupe-like shape. Notable changes include Taycan-inspired daytime running lights and a lower hoodline, devoid of the gas Macan’s clamshell design. Active aerodynamic features, such as a deployable rear spoiler and front flaps, contribute to a low drag coefficient of 0.25. Despite a 3.4-inch longer wheelbase, the overall length increases by only 2.3 inches. The width grows by 2.1 inches to 84.7 inches.

Interior

The interior of the latest Porsche model mirrors the design of the refreshed Cayenne and new Panamera. Featuring an all-digital gauge cluster and a wide screen with the latest infotainment system, it supports popular apps like Spotify and YouTube. Noteworthy additions include an optional passenger display and an augmented reality heads-up display. Despite modern upgrades, traditional elements like physical HVAC controls and a center console volume knob cater to traditionalists.

Price

The Macan 4 comes with a price tag, starting at $80,450, a $19,000 hike from the internal-combustion model. The Turbo is $106,950, $18,500 more than the top-tier GTS. Despite the enhanced performance, these price jumps are significant for an already pricey car, though it does make electric Porsche more accessible, starting at $92,550.

Porsche plans to extend production of the first-gen Macan in the US amid its discontinuation in Europe due to new EU cybersecurity rules. Although this move aids the US transition to electric vehicles, the impending electrification of the Macan underlines Porsche’s commitment to an electric future.
