Coupe-SUVs prioritize aesthetics over spaciousness. The stylish design, particularly the slanted roof, reduces the storage capacity, especially for taller items. Yet, a novel resolution to these constraints is introduced by the latest electric vehicle (EV) from a Chinese automaker.

Changan Automobile, the most established car manufacturer in China, introduced a distinct electric-only label named Qiyuan. Recent visuals uncovered on the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology website showcase the brand’s manufacturing model, the E07 – an SUV featuring an unconventional truck bed.

The Qiyuan E07 exhibits a unique feature with a movable rear glass panel, making it versatile for hauling cargo. Classified as a compact truck, it shares a similar length to the Ford Maverick. In contrast to the utilitarian nature of Ford’s pickup, the E07’s transformation into a truck is more of a novelty. Nevertheless, it’s an interesting concept.

It’s important to highlight that a similar concept existed in the past. During the mid-1960s, the Studebaker Wagonaire (depicted below) was a square-shaped wagon featuring a retractable sliding roof. Hopefully, the Qiyuan E07 executes this idea more effectively, as the Wagonaire faced issues with roof leakage, causing inconvenience for its convertible owners.

Qiyuan E07 users won’t have to shift the roof forward for cargo bed access, thanks to a distinct tailgate that operates independently of the retractable rear section. It remains uncertain if the cabin is isolated from the cargo area; the concept didn’t show this, potentially leaving passengers exposed to the elements. While a traditional truck with a canopy provides more utility, it lacks the streamlined profile that has enabled car manufacturers to establish a market for coupe-SUVs.

Concerning the technical details, this vehicle will be equipped with a single-motor configuration generating 338 horsepower. Opting for the all-wheel-drive version adds an extra 252-hp motor, resulting in a total of 590 hp. The Qiyuan E07, with its dual nature, will be offered with 20- and 21-inch wheels.

In spite of its remarkable capabilities, the Qiyuan E07, featuring a bed cover reminiscent of the Cybertruck, may not attract individuals with a genuine requirement for a pickup truck. It seems to be one of those vehicles catering to a particular lifestyle, often favored by the younger crowd.

Lastly, let’s explore the operational mechanism of the retractable roof on the Studebaker Wagonaire. And, not to overlook, the GMC Envoy also boasted a retractable roof.
