Toyota is giving a makeover to the GR86 in Japan for the 2024 model year. They’re introducing a special edition to celebrate four decades since the original AE86. This unique version, limited to 200 units, is available with either manual or automatic transmission. It pays homage to its retro roots with various interior and exterior enhancements. It’s based on the local RZ trim and can be ordered in white or red with black stripes, evoking an Initial D feel.
This special edition features 18-inch wheels finished in dark gray metallic and wrapped in 215/40 R18 tires. Toyota has also opted for a black finish on the side mirror caps and the prominent trunk lid spoiler, creating a striking contrast with the body paint. Inside, the theme combines black and red elements and a “Since 1983 40th” logo adorns the door cards, complementing the exterior decal.
Beyond the cosmetic updates, the 40th Anniversary Edition boasts performance enhancements, including upgraded Brembo ventilated disc brakes and Sachs absorbers. These improvements are also available as optional upgrades for the standard 2024 GR86, provided you order the car in the SZ trim or higher. These changes closely mirror those introduced in the Trueno Edition for the 2024 model year in the United States, where the Performance Pack offers the same Brembo and Sachs upgrades.
Toyota Japan is pricing the manual version of this special edition at 3,822,000 yen ($25,800) and the automatic version at 3,920,00 yen ($26,430). They anticipate high demand, and if it exceeds the planned production run, they will organize a lottery to determine who gets the chance to purchase the car.
The 2024 Toyota GR86 AE86 40th Anniversary Edition’s debut coincides with the launch of the 2024 Subaru BRZ STI Sport in Japan, essentially the Japanese counterpart to the BRZ tS available in the United States.
