If you’re not familiar with the McMurtry Spéirling, it’s a compact electric sports car that achieved an impressive feat at the Goodwood Hill Climb event recently. Guided by former Formula 1 racer Max Chilton, this small yet powerful electric vehicle completed the course in a remarkable time of 39.08 seconds. Surpassing the previous record set by Romain Dumas in the VW ID.R back in 2019, the Spéirling managed to shave off 0.8 seconds. Towards the end of last year, there was a captivating demonstration of its acceleration capabilities, as it accelerated from 0 to 60 mph (96 km/h) in a mere 1.4 seconds.
In the latest update, McMurtry Automotive has exciting news to share. They are thrilled to announce that the production phase of their remarkable electric vehicle has begun. However, it should be noted that only a limited number of 100 cars will be manufactured. Automotive enthusiasts will have the opportunity to catch a glimpse of the validation prototype at the upcoming Goodwood Festival of Speed, scheduled for next month.
The pre-production prototypes are slated to make their appearance in 2024, and the eagerly awaited customer deliveries are set to commence in 2025. As for the pricing details, brace yourself for this revelation. The Spéirling Pure can be yours for a starting price of £820,000 (excluding taxes). When converted, this amounts to approximately $1.04 million or €954,000, considering the prevailing exchange rates.
Get your money’s worth with a specialised electric vehicle designed exclusively for the track. This exceptional car features a lightweight carbon fibre monocoque. Its compact dimensions measure merely 3.45 metres long (equivalent to 135.8 inches), 1.58 metres wide (or 62.2 inches), and a mere 1.02 metres tall (40.1 inches).
Despite its low profile, it offers ample space for drivers up to 6’7″ (two meters) tall and weighing up to 150 kilograms (330 pounds). The vehicle boasts an astonishing 1,000 horsepower (745 kilowatts), all contained within a lightweight body weighing less than 2,200 pounds (1,000 kilograms).
The vehicle utilizes smaller 18-inch wheels, which are slightly lighter than the 19-inch wheels used in the previous model. These wheels are paired with wider 270-mm front and 300-mm rear slick tires. Additionally, an upgraded fan system is incorporated, boasting a 15 per cent enhancement in efficiency and a 14 per cent reduction in weight compared to the previous configuration. The battery pack, with a capacity of 60 kWh, can be fully charged within a mere 20 minutes, providing enough power for 10 laps at Silverstone when driven at maximum capacity.
McMurtry Automotive has implemented further refinements to enhance the suspension, body design, and aerodynamics, along with optimising the pedal box, electrical system, braking system, chassis, and power steering unit to reduce weight. The gearbox has undergone slight improvements, and a new, lighter battery with improved temperature control has been developed. Additionally, customers now have the choice of equipping their vehicles with anti-lock brakes.
While the exact acceleration from 0 to 60 mph is not specified, based on the performance of the previous model, it is safe to say that the car’s acceleration at full throttle will be exhilarating. When pushed to its limits, the vehicle is capable of reaching a top speed of 190 mph (306 km/h).
