The latest addition from Volvo is the EX30, an all-electric SUV that marks the brand’s venture into the subcompact premium SUV market. With its compact size and electric powertrain, the EX30 provides customers with a cost-effective and urban-friendly choice, complementing Volvo’s existing lineup of electric SUVs, such as the XC40 Recharge and C40 Recharge. This smallest SUV model represents Volvo’s commitment to expanding its range of eco-friendly vehicles, being their fourth offering in the all-electric category.
The starting price for this vehicle in the US is $34,950, and it is currently available for pre-order. In Europe, it will be priced at approximately 36,000 euros, with Volvo stating that the pricing aligns with an SUV of similar size powered by an internal combustion engine. Availability in the Gulf is still not confirmed.

According to Volvo, the EX30’s chassis has been finely tuned to optimize the advantages of its compact size, low centre of gravity, and evenly distributed weight. The minimum curb weight of the vehicle is 4,034 pounds (1,830 kg).
Unveiled yesterday in Milan, Italy, the EX30 showcases a naming convention akin to its larger counterpart, the Volvo EX90. The EX prefix denotes its exclusivity as a fully electric variant. Furthermore, it embraces a design reminiscent of the EX90, featuring notable elements such as the enclosed shield grille, a digital interpretation of the Thor’s Hammer headlights, divided taillights arranged in a similar manner, and a somewhat comparable dashboard configuration.
Please note that the EX30 is distinct from the EX90. Its design features a rising waistline that culminates in a substantial C-pillar, creating a captivating “floating roof” effect. The hood slopes more dramatically towards the front, and the robust wheel arches are significantly more pronounced compared to those of the EX90.
Interior
Within the EX30, you’ll find an understated interior design inspired by Scandinavian aesthetics, seamlessly integrated with advanced technology. The central dashboard boasts a 12.3-inch infotainment system, utilising a single-screen display. A unique feature of this vehicle is the soundbar that spans the entire upper section of the dashboard beneath the windshield – a pioneering accomplishment in automotive design.
The manufacturer has collaborated closely with renowned technology partners, including Google, Apple, and Qualcomm. This collaboration ensures an unparalleled user experience. Additionally, through a joint venture named HaleyTek, the automaker has teamed up with ECARX to create an excellent infotainment platform for their valued customers. Notably, the EX30 will also benefit from convenient over-the-air software updates.
The notable technological features include a digital key that works seamlessly with various phone brands and models. Moreover, a dedicated application provides convenient access to all car-related services, such as charging, locating, locking/unlocking, and heating. Additionally, the car is equipped with the latest version of the Park Pilot Assist feature, which can effortlessly maneuver in different parking scenarios, including parallel, curved, perpendicular, and diagonal fishbone-style parking spaces.
Regarding interior design, customers have the freedom to select from four unique interior themes and five distinct ambient lighting themes. Each theme is complemented by a matching ambient soundscape, enhancing the overall sensory experience.
Powertrain
In terms of its internal components, Volvo provides EX30 customers in the United States with two choices when it comes to powertrain configurations. These options are known as the Single Motor Extended Range and Twin Motor Performance. The Single Motor Extended Range consists of a rear-mounted electric motor that generates 268 horsepower (200 kilowatts) and 253 pound-feet (343 Newton-meters) of torque. It is paired with a high-capacity battery, capable of holding 64 kilowatt-hours of usable energy.
The EX30 Single Motor Extended Range battery comprises a blend of lithium, nickel, manganese, and cobalt, known as NMC chemistry. This combination empowers the vehicle to achieve an estimated distance of 275 miles before requiring a recharge.
For enhanced performance, the EX30 Twin Motor Performance variant incorporates an additional front electric motor, enabling all-wheel drive functionality. The combined power output reaches an impressive 422 horsepower (315 kW) and 400 lb-ft (543 Nm) of torque, resulting in an acceleration time from 0 to 60 mph in just 3.4 seconds. This remarkable feat establishes the EX30 Twin Motor Performance as Volvo’s fastest-accelerating production car to date.
The dual-motor model shares the same 64-kWh NMC battery and is projected to provide an approximate range of 265 miles.
In Europe and other regions, Volvo is set to introduce a basic Single Motor option that combines a rear motor generating 268 horsepower with an LFP battery pack. The battery pack has a usable capacity of 49 kWh and is expected to provide a range of approximately 200 miles. Regarding the charging capabilities, the NMC battery-powered versions can reach a maximum DC charging power of 153 kW. This allows for a 10-80 percent charging cycle in just over 26.5 minutes. On the other hand, the LFP battery variant supports charging speeds of up to 134 kW, completing the same cycle in 26 minutes.
In 2024, Volvo plans to introduce an exciting version of the EX30 known as the Cross Country edition. This variant is specifically designed for adventurous journeys, offering enhanced ground clearance and a distinctive appearance. It will be equipped with either 19-inch black wheels or 18-inch wheels paired with custom all-terrain tyres. The vehicle will also feature skid plates, special black panels on the front bumper and trunk lid, and exclusive Cross Country branding. Interested customers can place their orders for the EX30 Cross Country starting in 2024, and production is slated to commence later in the same year.
