There has been speculation about an upgraded version of the Yaris Cross for quite some time, and Lexus recently introduced the LBX. Serving as the latest addition to their lineup, this compact crossover is positioned (below the UX) as the entry-level model, taking the place of the discontinued CT hatchback. While sharing the same GA-B platform as its Toyota counterpart, the Lexus LBX features distinct design elements that align with the brand’s aesthetic, ensuring an internally and externally cohesive look.

2023 Lexus LBX Preview

Dimensions

The LBX measures 4190 millimeters (165 inches) in length, 1825 mm (71.8 in) in width, and 1545 mm (60.8 in) in height. It has a wheelbase of 2580 mm (101.5 in). The petite Lexus rides on 18-inch wheels as its standard equipment and is marginally larger than the Yaris Cross. Its weight is approximately 1,280 kilograms (2,821 pounds). Customers will have the option to choose between front- and all-wheel drive. In all configurations, the vehicle will come equipped with a continuously variable transmission.

Powertrain

The LBX boasts a powertrain that combines the performance of a three-cylinder, 1.5-litre gasoline engine. This impressive engine generates a total output of 134 horsepower (100 kilowatts) and a maximum torque of 185 Newton meters (136 pound-feet). With this level of power, it delivers swift acceleration from 0 to 62 mph (100 km/h) in just 9.2 seconds while also providing a robust towing capacity of 750 kilograms (1,653 pounds).

The latest models of Lexus feature a front suspension system utilizing MacPherson struts, and the rear suspension varies depending on whether it’s a front-wheel-drive (FWD) or all-wheel-drive (AWD) model. A torsion beam is employed for FWD versions, while AWD models are equipped with a double wishbone setup. Detailed technical specifications for the AWD variant haven’t been revealed yet, but it is confirmed to incorporate an additional electric motor at the rear. Notably, this compact crossover boasts an aluminum hood and utilizes molded resin wheel arches, rockers, and lower door sections, all contributing to weight reduction.

Interior

Upon entering, the LBX presents a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, complemented by a 9.8-inch touchscreen display. An available head-up display adds to the immersive experience. The infotainment system supports both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, though wireless connectivity is exclusively offered for Apple devices. Notably, Lexus has collaborated once more with Mark Levinson to provide an exceptional 13-speaker sound system, complete with a subwoofer.

When you opt for the front-wheel-drive variant, you’ll enjoy a cargo capacity of 332 liters (11.7 cubic feet) with the rear seats in their position. However, if you go for the AWD-equipped LBX, it might be less convenient due to the additional hardware installed in the rear. Lexus emphasizes that despite being their latest entry-level model, they haven’t compromised on quality and attention to detail. It’s worth noting that the LBX is the first vehicle from Lexus to have undergone significant development in Europe.

The production timeline aims for completion before the year’s end, with plans to release it in Europe and other markets (hopefully the Gulf as well) in early 2024.
