In January, a fascinating sight greeted us: the successor to the Aston Martin DB11 made its debut. The vehicle sported its production figure and lights, yet its official name remained a mystery. Now, Aston Martin proudly unveils the brand-new DB12, marking a transformative chapter for the company. This remarkable car boasts enhanced power, superior dynamics, and an elevated standard of interior comfort.
Aston Martin expresses great pride in its latest creation, heralding it as an unparalleled super tourer and the pinnacle of DB models ever produced. However, no specific reference to a V12 engine has been made at this point. Nevertheless, the recently enhanced twin-turbo 4.0-litre V8, acquired from Mercedes-AMG, boasts a significant boost in power, surpassing even the formidable DB11 V12 in terms of sheer performance.
In this latest release, the eight-cylinder engine generates a remarkable output of 671 horsepower at 6,000 rpm, accompanied by a substantial torque of 590 pound-feet. This power boost exceeds 30 percent when compared to its V8 predecessor and even outperforms the DB11 AMR with its upgraded 5.2-litre V12 engine, providing an additional 41 hp. The acceleration of the new coupe from 0 to 60 miles per hour is a swift 3.5 seconds, and it boasts an impressive top speed of 202 mph.
Aston Martin claims to have implemented significant enhancements to the V8 engine, augmenting its performance beyond previous iterations. These improvements involve adjustments to the cam profiles, optimization of compression ratios, utilization of bigger turbochargers, and the introduction of a redesigned cooling system.
The new cooling system incorporates two supplementary auxiliary coolers alongside the existing main radiator, resulting in improved cooling capabilities. Another notable feature in the DB12, a first for the DB series, is the integration of an electronic rear differential. This advanced component swiftly transitions from a fully locked state to a completely open state within milliseconds. The V8 engine operates in conjunction with an eight-speed automatic transmission.
The tremendous power demands a suspension system capable of handling the amplified forces. Therefore, Aston Martin presents its latest iteration of adaptive dampers and reinforced anti-roll bars. Aston Martin offers three distinct driving modes: GT, Sport, and Sport+, each progressively enhancing responsiveness and rigidity. When operating in the most conservative mode, the manufacturer assures a comfortable ride quality that delivers a blend of serenity and nimble maneuvering.
In terms of design, the DB12 showcases a blend of recognizable elements and extensive enhancements. The prominent feature at the front is a substantial grille, accompanied by newly integrated LED headlights. Positioned above the grille is Aston Martin’s most recent emblem, while below it, there is a thoroughly reimagined splitter. The vehicle is equipped with standard 21-inch wheels that discreetly conceal cast-iron front discs measuring 400 millimeters and rear discs measuring 360 millimeters. To enhance the sleekness and reduce air resistance, the DB12 incorporates frameless side mirrors and streamlined door handles.
Among the notable features found within the car’s interior, aside from the impressive centre console tailored for drivers and the premium Alcantara leather, is the recently introduced multimedia system. Aston Martin took great care in designing and developing this system entirely in-house. It offers seamless integration with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, enabling wireless connectivity. The navigation system has also been revamped, now incorporating online capabilities, 3D mapping, and a companion mobile application. Additionally, the system supports over-the-air updates, ensuring ongoing enhancements.
Aston Martin plans to commence deliveries of the highly anticipated DB12 in the third quarter of this year. Detailed pricing information is expected to be revealed closer to the official launch.
