No need to have a connection to the 1980s to develop a deep affection for this impressive dune buggy. Meet the Tamiya Wild One Max, a remarkable recreation of the classic Wild One. This 1:10 scale remote-controlled dune buggy captured the hearts of many enthusiasts during the latter part of the ’80s, often showcased in Radio Controlled Car Action magazine. Remember, it is not just a mere replica; it’s a fully functional vehicle that you can drive yourself.

The project, a collaboration between The Little Car Company and Tamiya, has undergone significant transformations during the past couple of years. Notably, the current version of Wild One Max is now classified as life-sized, in contrast to its earlier designation as an 8:10-scale small car. One reason for the size augmentation is the inclusion of a second seat, enabling two individuals to partake in sand-hopping adventures with this off-road vehicle.

When it comes to performance, there’s a lot more oomph to consider. According to The Little Car Company, the vehicle utilizes eight detachable battery packs, which produce a combined output of 14.4 kWh. The electric motor powers the rear wheels, similar to the original remote-controlled buggy, but this updated version can reach a top speed of 60 mph. To handle rough terrain, the vehicle is equipped with Bilstein shock absorbers and Eibach springs, as well as Brembo brakes and 14-inch Maxxis off-road rubber on each side. The front suspension mounting has been improved to enhance safety and view, while the trailing arm blueprint of the prototype has been upgraded to a double wishbone configuration.

The car’s interior features a digital display that measures five inches, providing essential information to the driver. The switches used are of marine grade, suitable for use in an open-air vehicle. Passengers sit on Cobra seats with 4-position harnesses. The Little Car Company plans to make a road-legal package available for those who wish to experience the 1980s in a more public setting in the UK and the European Union. Regarding North America and potentially the UAE, the Wild One Max will be accessible; however, there are currently no intentions for developing a version compliant with street regulations.

“We are incredibly excited to announce that we are nearing the highly anticipated unveiling of our latest creation, the Tamiya Wild One Max Launch Edition,” expressed Ben Hedley, CEO of The Little Car Company. “Although we encountered a few challenges due to widespread supply concerns within the industry, our dedicated team has accomplished an exceptional feat by transforming a remote-controlled car into a life-sized marvel. I am filled with immense pride for their remarkable achievements.”

The Little Car Company intends to disclose pricing details at a later stage, aligning with their official public introduction. Performance statistics will also be unveiled at that time as the testing process remains in progress. In the year 2024, the company plans to produce 100 Launch Edition models, with additional variations of the Wild One Max slated for future release.
