If you have an eye for the aesthetics of the latest electric SUV, the Kia EV9, brace yourself, for its younger sibling, the EV5, is just as striking. Unveiled as a concept, this compact EV crossover boasts the same contemporary, cuboid look as its larger counterpart and presents a teaser of what’s to come: a production model set to hit Chinese markets later this year. As for its arrival in the US and UAE, Kia has yet to disclose its plans, though we anticipate that it will make its way across the Pacific and Gulf in the not-too-distant future.

On the surface, it’s difficult to discern any drastic differences in size between the EV5 and the EV9 from these images. With Kia yet to release dimensions for this model, all we know is that the former boasts a shorter wheelbase and two rows of seats compared to the latter’s three-row layout. In terms of nomenclature, the EV5 moniker implies that it will slot in beneath the mid-size crossover, the EV6 – a vehicle with a more streamlined profile – in both dimensions and price.

Architecture

While specs remain elusive, we’re surmising that the EV5 shares the E-GMP platform with Kia’s other new EV models. This platform should allow for lightning-quick charging, courtesy of its 800-volt electrical architecture, with multiple battery-pack options and single- and dual-motor layouts potentially on the table.

Interior

The EV5’s futuristic interior is a feast for the eyes, replete with rear-hinged rear doors that yawn open with majestic width. Its highly minimalistic dashboard layout is a sight to behold, with wild-looking front and rear seats that beckon you to sink into their plush upholstery. The cargo area is an exercise in utility, featuring a platform that appears tailor-made for tailgating events, while the seats themselves swivel and contort in a myriad of ways that are sure to impress even the most jaded of passengers.

Admittedly, this exuberant display of design might be toned down a notch for production. Nonetheless, it’s worth noting that the EV9 production model boasts swiveling rear seats, hinting that a similar feature may make its way into the final version of the EV5.

As Kia puts the finishing touches on the EV5’s production model for its Chinese debut, it’s only a matter of time before we learn more about this electrifying wonder. While the Korean automaker has yet to reveal any concrete details for global markets, the announcement teasingly suggests that information will be forthcoming “in due course”. With a tantalizing hint like that, it’s hard not to let one’s imagination run wild with visions of the EV5 carving up UAE highways, or cruising down the cobblestone streets of Europe. Keep your eyes peeled and your ear to the ground – the EV5 may soon be headed your way.
