Some people believe Subaru only creates all-wheel-drive vehicles, but in reality, it is not true. In its home market, the Japanese automaker creates Kei cars that come with a standard front-wheel drivetrain. The Rex crossover unveiled last month is also an FWD vehicle, and so is the 2023 Subaru Crosstrek that came in September.

Previously called the XV in select markets, it is a small crossover with a standard front-wheel drive developed in Japan. Subaru offers it in Touring and Limited variants in Japan, giving buyers an opportunity to either select FWD or AWD powertrain.

The third-generation Crosstrek uses a naturally aspirated 2.0-litre mill creating 145 horsepower (107 kilowatts) at 6,000 rpm and 188 Newton-meters (139 pound-feet) of torque from 4,000 rpm. There is an electric motor that generates 13 hp (10 kW) and 65 Nm (48 lb-ft). We do not have the performance figures yet, but that might not be a problem for a regular crossover buyer.

Irrespective of the drivetrain, the new Crosstrek comes with 200 mm (about eight inches) of ground clearance and weights between 1,540 and 1,620 kilograms (3,395 to 3,571 pounds), according to the variant, the drivetrain, and the optional features. Subaru didn’t reveal plans for any other powertrain, but the US-spec and UAE-spec Crosstrek might offer a petrol-only setup.

As for other JDM vehicles, the automaker gives customers a chance to pick from a range of accessories, comprising a few STI-labeled equipments such as wheels, center-mounted dual exhaust tips, roof spoiler, strut bar, and a red start/stop button.

The pricing starts at 2,662,000 yen (around $20,000) for the Touring with FWD and jumps to 3,289,000 yen (about $25,000) for the Limited with AWD. The cost encompasses the local consumption tax (10 percent). The FWD variant costs 220,000 yen ($1,600) less than the AWD and also renders a little better fuel economy.
