Ford introduced the 2024 Mustang at the North American International Auto Show in September and soon after that unveiled two race-oriented models of the pony car. These two models of the seventh generation S650 will be exclusively for the track.
Surprisingly, Ford revealed another track car of the new Mustang that will race next year. Called the Mustang GT Gen3 Supercar, it will compete in the 2023 Australian Supercars Championship. The pictures shown here are of the exact race car that will race next year in Australia.
Of course, the GT Gen3 Supercar is based on the road-going seventh-generation Mustang, but Ford has made some desired changes. The new Coyote V8 mill is updated by Ford Performance to improve its displacement to 5.4-litres among other changes.
Ford claims the V8 will create more than 600 horsepower (447 kilowatts) and more than 479 pound-feet (650 Newton-meters) of torque for the Gen3 Supercar. The power will go to the wheels through a lever-actuated, sequential shift Xtrac 6-speed transaxle transmission.
The Mustang Gen3 is an effort of Ford Performance and Ford’s homologation group, Dick Johnson Racing. Dick Johnson will be the first man to test drive this car at the Bathurst 1000.
Soon after the Mustang Gen3 Supercar unveiling, Ford introduced another track-only Mustang, dubbed Dark Horse R. It is one of the six racing Mustangs Ford has planned. These race cars will use GT3 and GT4 names, and there will also be vehicles for NASCAR and NHRA Factory X. The S650 in GT3 grade will compete in the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 2024. It will be the first race after 27 years at the Circuit de la Sarthe that Ford will compete in.
