DeLorean has returned to the scene and joined the EV race with its all-new Alpha5. The EV took inspiration from the iconic DMC-12, which was designed with gullwing doors by Italdesign. Also styled by the same designer, the Delorean Alpha5, has so many modern elements that make it stand apart.
Going with the innovative EV styling are huge wheels and thin lights on the front and back. The curved structure has the charging port located on the driver’s side front fender, which is more convenient for the owners. The two-tone colour and a curvy roofline remind us of the vehicle that became popular due to the Back to the Future series.
The interior ditches the flux capacitor and adds two separate rear seats. As customary with new expensive electric vehicles, it has very few controls and most of the functions work through a big touchscreen located on a floating centre console. The driver finds a broad digital instrument cluster and a flat-bottom steering wheel as he/she sits. Getting in and out of the rear seats is easy thanks to the gullwing doors and there are no B-pillars.
The automaker didn’t reveal information regarding the drivetrain but informed us that the EV will hit 60 mph in 3.4 seconds and top out at 150 mph (241 km/h). The battery pack will offer over 100 kWh capacity and an EPA-projected range of over 300 miles (483 kilometers).
Keep in mind that these specifications are for the base variant, so we can expect faster speeds. DeLorean says it has an outstanding low drag coefficient of 0.23. However, that doesn’t best the Mercedes EQS.
It is much larger than its ancestor with 4,995 millimeters (196.6 inches) of length, 2,044 mm (80.4 in) of width, and 1,370 mm (53.9 in) of height when you open gullwing doors. The company confirms that the development will happen in Italy and the powertrain will be supplied by a UK firm.
Only 88 units are planned for now with a V8-coupe to follow later on. If things go as devised, the company plans to introduce an electric sedan and even a hydrogen-powered utility vehicle. DeLorean will display the Alpha5 at Pebble Beach this year and start its production in 2024.
