The 2023 BMW M4 CSL high-performance coupe makes its debut just in time to commemorate the brand’s 50 years of existence. It will be a limited edition model as BMW plans to develop only 1,000 units for the worldwide markets.
Thanks to various updates over the M4 Competition, the new coupe becomes the quickest series-production car ever to lap the Nürburgring’s Nordschleife track. The M4 CSL completed the circuit in only 7:20.2.
Talking about the design changes, all of them relate to performance. The front changes increase the car’s cooling potential and downforce. Besides, the vehicle has various high- and low-temp cooling circuits to maintain appropriate temperatures for different parts.
Powertrain
The power comes from a twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six engine creating 543 horsepower (404 kilowatts), which is 40 horsepower more than the M4 Competition. The mill creates 479 pound-feet (649 Newton-meters) of torque accessible from 2,750 to 5,950 rpm. The engineers also turned on the boost pressure to 30.5 psi which is 5.8 psi more than the Competition.
All this power goes to the rear wheel via the eight-speed M Steptronic transmission with Drivelogic. Behind the steering wheel, we find carbon-fiber paddle shifters to run the car in manual mode, taking the gear shifts to the lowest level. The upshifts won’t happen automatically as the car accelerates.
BMW claims the 2023 M4 CSL can zoom to 60 miles per hour (96 kilometers per hour) in 3.6 seconds and 120 mph (193 kph) in 10.5 seconds on its way to an electronically limited top speed of 191 mph (307 kph).
Weight Loss Diet
To make the coupe more efficient, the engineers had to make several changes, primarily to shed its weight. They have been successful in shaving off 240 pounds (108.8 kilograms), and now it has an overall curb weight of 3,640-lbs (1,605-kg).
The weight loss diet comprised slashing the back seats (46 lbs), swapping lightweight sound insulation (33 lbs), utilizing interior and exterior carbon-fiber-reinforced plastic (CFRP) parts (24 lbs), and fixing a titanium rear silencer (9 lbs).
Furthermore, the M Carbon ceramic brakes shed 31.5 pounds more, whereas the application of CFRP on the hood and trunk eliminated another 3 lbs and 15 lbs, respectively. The automaker also reduced 8 pounds from different parts like the kidney grille, rear lights, floor mats, and automatic climate control system. The use of carbon fiber on the center console reduced around 9 lbs. However, the biggest weight reduction comes from M Carbon full bucket seats that shed 53 lbs from the coupe.
Bucket Seats
Speaking of the M Carbon full bucket seats, they are not typical BMW seats. They do not have lumbar support, power adjustability, and heating. Nevertheless, BMW will install heated M Carbon bucket seats with complete power-adjustability at no cost, as well.
Other Modifications to M4 CSL
Besides, the utilization of CFRP for the double-bubble roof aids in minimizing the coupe’s overall curb weight and lowering its centre of gravity. Other changes include toughened engine and transmission mounts, a model-specific suspension that drops the ride height by 0.3 inches, and various suspension components2023 exclusively created for the CSL. These consist of anti-roll bars, wheel camber settings, and dampers.
Price & Availability
The 2023 BMW M4 CSL will cost $140,895 (comprising the $995 destination fee) at least. BMW will start its development in July 2022.
