After showcasing a teaser picture to the public, Mercedes introduced a new base model for the SL-Class roadster. Called the Mercedes-AMG SL43, it comes equipped with half the engine cylinders of other variants, meaning the twin-turbocharged V8 is replaced by a single-turbo four-cylinder. Since it is an AMG engine, it is not a usual four-banger and it definitely doesn’t deliver half the power output.
New Powertrain
Going into the details of the M139 turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine, the increased power is a product of a single electric exhaust gas turbocharger. Mercedes has been using this tech in its Formula 1 cars, where the 48-volt electrical system energizes the starter-generator.
In other words, a tiny motor in the turbo rotates the shaft up until exhaust gases take control. The outcome through the mill delivers “particularly spontaneous throttle response across the entire rev range” while improving the powerplant’s productivity.
So, what exactly is the power output? The Mercedes-AMG SL43’s 2.0-L four-cylinder engine pumps out 381 horsepower (284 kilowatts) at 6,750 rpm. Speaking of torque figure, it delivers a resolute 354 pound-feet (480 Newton-meters) available at 3,250 rpm and going stable to 5,000 revs.
The starter-generator system brings an additional 14 hp (10 kW) on the table for little episodes and that makes the roadster a mild hybrid. The power goes to the rear wheels only through the well-known nine-speed MCT.
Performance Figures
Floor the throttle and the roadster can sprint from 0 to 62 mph (0-100 km/h) in 4.9 seconds. Keep pushing the throttle and SL43 can attain a top speed of 171 mph (275 km/h). While it possesses half the turbos, half the cylinders, and half the displacement of its other more powerful variants in the lineup, it definitely doesn’t deliver half the performance.
Mercedes has also specifically indicated that the smaller mill means lower weight under the hood, offering the roadster its own handling attributes. Other changes include lighter torsion bar stabilizers exclusive to the SL43.
Design
Looking at the design, it looks pretty similar to its siblings. However, a close look will help you find minor alterations to the vents on the lower front end, in addition to a flat rear fascia lacking vertical vents. Further changes include oval exhaust tips instead of square ones and definitely, it has its own badging. The standard wheels are 19-inch that can be upgraded to 20-inch and 21-inch wheels.
Besides these, you will get all the latest SL facilities you expect from the SL55 and SL63. We are talking about accessible rear steering, various drive modes, the AMG Dynamic Plus Package, a completely posh interior packed with digital displays, and the new MBUX system.
Pricing and Availability
Unfortunately, the German automaker did not provide any details of the price and its availability. For that, we have to wait for a few more days.
