Mazda has introduced their first-ever plug-in hybrid model, the 2022 CX-60 for Europe, Japan, and other select countries. While it may appear familiar, it is essentially a brand-new SUV boasting Skyactiv Multi Solution Scalable Architecture with the i-Activ AWD layout mainly sending power to the rear wheels.

The plug-in hybrid model will come first featuring a naturally aspirated 2.5-litre petrol mill paired with an electric motor. The automaker says the ICE generates 189 horsepower (141 kilowatts) and 261 Newton-metres (193 pound-feet) of torque. The electric motor produces 134 hp (100 kW) and 250 Nm (184 lb-ft). The whole hybrid powertrain is good for a decent (241 kW) and 500 Nm (369 lb-ft) of torque.

The 2022 Mazda CX-60 will be capable to hit 62 mph (100 km/h) speed in 5.8 seconds and top out at 124 mph (200 km/h). In the electric mode, the maximum speed it can attain is 87 mph. In the same state, the SUV can use its 17.8-kWh battery to deliver up to 63 kilometres (39 miles) range on the WLTP system.

Speaking of its size, the new plug-in hybrid SUV is 4,745 millimeters (186.8 inches) long, 1,890 mm (74.4 in) wide, and 1,670 mm (65.7 in) tall. Having a wheelbase of 2,870 mm (113 in), it is larger in every sense compared to the newly unveiled forward-wheel-drive CX-50 in the U.S.

For a plug-in hybrid, the weight is always deciding factor for buyers. The CX-60 weighs 2,070 kilograms (4,564 pounds) using the 20-inch wheels or a tad lower at 2,055 kg (4,530 lbs) sporting the 18-inch alloys.

The example you see in the picture above sports a new Rhodium White Premium Metallic paint featuring an extended hood to house longitudinally-mounted mills. Later, Mazda will introduce an inline-six petrol and a diesel engine. The first e-Skyactiv X will offer a 3.0-litre displacement while the Skyactiv-D will have a 3.3-litre displacement. Both will be assisted by a 48-volt mild-hybrid tech to minimize emissions and improve fuel economy.

All the powertrains for the CX-60 will use Mazda’s freshly created eight-speed automatic transmission with a multi-plate clutch. For the PHEV model, the electric motor is fixed into the gearbox and runs precisely on the input shaft. You can recharge its battery on a 7.2kW charger.   We do not know how much time it will take to recharge its battery, but the vehicle does support regenerative braking.

On the inside, we find the 2022 Mazda CX-60 quite luxurious focusing on a minimalistic approach. However, we can still find physical control for various functions, which is a good thing.

The 2022 CX-60 will be available in Prime, Exclusive, Homura, and Takumi models in Germany. The price will start at €47,390 and go as high as €52,890. The white shade will demand an additional €950 while a panoramic glass roof, a driver assistance package, leather upholstery convenience & sound package are also accessible depending on the trim level.

Mazda plans to introduce a three-row CX-80 model in the future as well.
