The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety has announced the top performers of 2022 for the Top Safety Pick (TSP+) and Top Safety Pick+ (TSP) awards. Compared to 49 TSP+ and 41 TSP vehicles last year, 65 automobiles gained the TSP+ award, and 36 received the less privileged TSP rating from IIHS.
The Hyundai Motor Group consisting of Hyundai, Kia, and Genesis marques topped the award list with a total of 21 vehicles. Out of 21, 11 received Top Safety Pick+ honors, and 10 earned Top Safety Pick honours.
Which vehicles received these awards? Well, the Tucson, Palisade, Santa made after July 2021 landed in the Top Safety Pick+ category along with Nexo, Kia K5, Kia Stinger, and Genesis G70, G80, G90, GV70, and GV80 developed after June 2021.
Another auto brand that did great in the testing was Volvo which received Top Safety Pick+ honour for all ten vehicles.
Those who are not aware of IIHS testing should know that the Top Safety Pick award goes to vehicles that earn a Good rating in all six crashworthiness evaluations. Another requisite for the TSP for vehicles is the Front Crash Prevention tech with an Advanced or Superior score in the vehicle-to-vehicle and vehicle-to-pedestrian test. The optional headlights must also get a Good or Acceptable rank.
On the other hand, for vehicles to get the Top Safety Pick+ award, they should have passed everything set for the TSP, plus the standard headlights must earn a Good or Acceptable rating.
Moving into 2023, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety will introduce more stringent tests. To start with, the next year’s evaluations will run the side impact test at a faster pace and with a heftier barricade. In this test, the vehicle will earn the Top Safety Pick award if it achieves either Good or Acceptable. The Top Safety Pick+ requires the car to get a Good rating.
Besides the updated side impact evaluation, IIHS will also perform a new nighttime pedestrian crash prevention examination. The vehicle eyeing for a Top Safety Pick+ honour should get an Advanced or Superior score.
Lastly, the car must have standard headlights that could earn it a Good or Acceptable rank for a Top Safety Pick.
