The trio from South Korea did a great job in J.D. Power’s 2022 Vehicle Dependability Study. Yes, we are talking about Kia, Genesis, and Hyundai – all of them received accolades. Kia and Genesis received the highest rank in their respective categories – Kia aced the mass market, while Genesis topped the premium vehicle segment.

Among the mass-market brands, Hyundai rated two places below Kia, just one rank under Buick. The fourth and fifth spots belong to Toyota and Dodge. In the premium vehicle segment, Genesis is followed by Lexus, Porsche, Cadillac, and Lincoln.

The J.D. Power survey requested vehicle owners to give their opinion regarding nine major car categories, consisting of powertrain, infotainment tech, and driving experience. J.D. Power used the owner’s responses to calculate a record based on a 1,000-point gauge to recognize the number of issues an owner experiences per 100 vehicles (PP100). At the top of the ranking, Kia achieved 145 PP100, while Genesis gained 155 PP110.

Here is the complete ranking list for the mass-market segment.

  • Kia – 145 PP100

  • Buick – 147 PP100

  • Hyundai – 148 PP100

  • Toyota – 158 PP100

  • Dodge – 166 PP100

The premium category list is as follows:

  • Genesis – 155 PP100

  • Lexus – 159 PP100

  • Porsche – 162 PP100

  • Cadillac – 168 PP100

  • Lincoln – 180 PP100

The study found owners complaining most about the infotainment systems, which received more than double the criticism of any other category. What bothered owners the most were built-in voice recognition, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay connectivity, built-in Bluetooth systems, and insufficient ports.

J.D. Power’s study does not only rate automakers on the dependability, it also pinpoints the best vehicles in different classes – from compact mass-market cars to big posh utility vehicles. The most reliable mass-market vehicles encompassed the Ford Mustang, Toyota Corolla, and Mazda Miata.

Interestingly, Lexus spotted its three vehicles in the premium-vehicle category, placing the UX, NX, and RX in the list. Besides, the German premium brand’s Cayenne was also among the best. J.D. Power also found out that the 2019 Porsche 911 was the most reliable model.
