In the next four years, Mercedes will only work on all-electric platforms in order to accelerate its transition from combustion engine cars to zero-emission vehicles.
While doing so, the sedans and wagons will be the ones taking the first hits. While we are not sure what will happen to these models, one thing is sure that the German automaker has decided to seize production of plug-in hybrids.
At the IAA Mobility in Munich, Daimler executives validated that they do not have any plan to produce new plug-in hybrid powertrains. The presently available models like the Mercedes-AMG GT 63 S E Performance will continue along with other related products for some time, but the company will not spend money on next-generation PHEV systems.
“No further new developments are planned,” Markus Schäfer, Daimler board member responsible for research and development, told Germany’s Handelsblatt newspaper in Munich. “The investments have been made, to that extent, we are using them.”
A couple of months back, the automaker said that they will produce only electric cars from 2030 for European, North American, and Japanese markets. The combustion-powered will phase out slowly and will be accessible for other parts of the world.
Looking closely at the matter, we believe the lately revealed hybridized AMG GT 63 S E might not live for long because AMG will solely work on zero-emission vehicles in the future.
