The COVID-19 pandemic has hit the automotive sector a long ago, but its destruction has become more prominent now. Although all automakers are now facing supply chain issues, its challenges for an inexperienced startup like Lucid Motors are far graver. With an aim to start the development of its first electric car, the Air sedan, in spring, the deliveries of Air Dream Edition are now moved to fall 2021.

However, it could be a blessing in disguise for Lucid’s customers, who now have two options for the Air Dream Edition. The launch model will now be available in the Dream Edition Performance and the Dream Edition Range.

Earlier, Lucid announced the Air Dream Edition in one specification only, i.e. an EV delivering 1080 horsepower and a declared 503 miles of range. Now, the Dream Edition comes in Performance and Range models.

As the name implies, the Performance is “optimized for speed and acceleration”, whereas the Range focuses on making the most of the driving range. The Performance’s powertrain creates 1,111 horsepower while the Range offers 933 ponies. The torque figure of 737 pound-feet would remain the same for both.

Regarding performance number, the automaker says the Range will accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in 2.7 seconds, whereas the Performance will be a touch quicker with 2.5 seconds for the same sprint. The top speed of both models remains at 168-mph.

Both the sedans will use Pirelli P Zero tires; however, the Performance will sport a staggered configuration with standard 21-inch wheels. On the other hand, the Range will use 19-inch wheels, although buyers have the option to choose any of the two wheels.

While the EPA did not release the range figures yet, we can get some idea of it through Lucid’s recent test drive. The company tested two Air Dream Edition Range cars to travel from Los Angeles to Lucid’s headquarters outside San Francisco and achieved 445 miles of range.

It does look fascinating, but we should not take it as an accurate figure since it was a one-off occurrence. The EPA certification is the one we should rely on for the vehicle’s genuine range.

The automaker says they will contact the Air Dream Edition booking customers soon to know their choice between the Performance and Range. Regardless of which version they choose, the price of both will be $169,000 – the same Dream Edition was first introduced.

Expect the Dream Edition to reach customer’s doorsteps before the end of this year, with the more affordable Grand Touring model coming afterwards.
