After sharing some teasers, Acura finally unveiled the NSX Type S yesterday. The special edition NSX will be available for public viewing at 2021 Monterey Car Week. Acura plans to develop only 350 units of the Type S, and 300 are destined for the U.S.
Under the hood of the 2022 Acura NSX Type S is a 3.5-litre twin-turbo V6 getting assistance from three electric motors to bump the output to 600 horsepower and 492 pound-feet of torque. It is 27 hp and 16 lb-ft more than the standard NSX offering 573 hp and 476 lb-ft.
The engineers have borrowed turbos from the NSX GT3 Evo race car, improving the boost pressure by 6%. Other changes that make it more powerful are new fuel injectors and enhanced intercoolers.
Acura has also improved the hybrid powertrain by increasing the battery size up to 20 per cent. The result is a 10 per cent improvement in the output and a decline in gear ratio for the front motors that went from 10.382:1 to 8.050:1.
The engineers have also updated the nine-speed dual-clutch gearbox, allowing it to upshift 50 per cent faster. A new Rapid Downshift Mode lets you skip gears when going to lower cogs.
The Acura NSX Type S comes equipped with forged five-spoke wheels with a split-spoke pattern. Buyers can pick from a Matte Shark Gray or a Gloss Berlina Black finish. They bump the Type S’ track by 0.4 inches in front and 0.8 inches at the rear compared to the regular NSX. The car uses bespoke Pirelli P-Zeros.
Those desiring a better performance can opt for the Acura Lightweight Package. It includes carbon-ceramic brakes, a carbon-fibre engine cover, and carbon interior trim, dropping the curb weight of the car by 57.8 lbs. (26.2 kg)
Visually, the 2022 Acura NSX Type S features a bigger front grille opening that enhances engine cooling. Acura has used carbon fibre for the front splitter, side sills and rear spoiler. Moreover, there is a carbon-fibre rear diffuser borrowed from the NSX GT3 race car and a carbon fibre roof. The plan is to develop 70 units in the Type-S-special colour Gotham Gray with a matte finish.
Peeping inside and we find an Alcantara headliner, the Type S logo on the outside of the glove compartment, and an engraved NSX logo on the headrests.
The NSX Type S order books are open, asking buyers to dole out at least $169,500. For those who fancy the Lightweight Package, the price jumps to $182,500.
