Volkswagen has been working on a next-generation T7 multi-purpose van for years. The wait is over now, as the automaker has introduced the Multivan model. Meet the 2022 VW T7 Multivan with more usefulness and a hybrid powertrain.
For the first time, the new T7 Multivan also comes with a plug-in hybrid powertrain. VW named it eHybrid and it features a 1.4-litre TSI engine and an 85kW electric motor to create 215 horsepower (160 kilowatts) collectively. The electric motor gets juice from a 13-kilowatt-hour lithium-ion battery that sits low beneath the van’s floor.
The automaker didn’t provide us with the electric-only specs; however, they did mention it would be enough for short city tours. The eHybrid powertrain gets a six-speed DSG transmission.
If you are not a fan of hybrids, Volkswagen still offers ICEs for the T7. You can opt for either a turbocharged 1.5-litre TSI engine yielding 134 hp (100 kW) or a more powerful turbocharged 2.0-litre TSI producing 201 hp (150 kW). A four-cylinder turbo diesel churning out 148 hp (110 kW) will be a part of the lineup later on. All the internal combustion engines pair with a seven-speed DSG.
For a multi-purpose van, it should be practical for various tasks. The next-gen VW T7 Multivan is a little bigger generally than the previous versions. The extended model provides 143 cubic feet (4,053 litres) of boot space. The modular seating setup gives the liberty to adjust and remove every seat. It is a new interior facility where occupants can spin the second-row seats to 180 degrees for a conference setup. A multi-purpose table is also part of the package with the ability to slide.
To make driving closer to nature, you can opt for a panoramic glass roof as well as enjoy standard the T7’s digital makeover. The VW T7 Multivan boasts a 10.25-inch digital instrument screen and a 10-inch centre infotainment display. Drivers can even benefit from a heads-up display, which is a first for any Volkswagen Commercial Vehicle.
Although the cabin looks pretty simple, VW armed the new T7 with loads of technologies. The Ready 2 Discover infotainment comes with We Connect Plus, which owners can access free for three years. The connected services encompass navigation, real-time traffic reports, and others. The advanced Harmon Kardon sound system with 14 speakers is standard, as well.
There are plenty of driver-assist and safety techs – at least 34 to be exact including standard automatic emergency braking and lane-keep assist. Car2X – a point-to-point communication system – is also there to communicate with other vehicles and inform drivers of possible dangers ahead. Predictive cruise control and lane assist are a part of semi-autonomous driving.
