One of the most significant SUV launches has just happened. Yes, Toyota has introduced the highly anticipated 2022 Land Cruiser for the Middle East, Russia and other regions (Guys in America; sorry, it will not be available in the U.S., for now at least).
While some would argue that it is not an all-new Land Cruiser, we tend to differ. First off, Toyota has built it on the new TNGA platform, which might underpin the 2022 Tundra as well. Secondly, the company’s flagship SUV has ditched the long-running and fuel-thirsty 5.7-litre V8 naturally-aspirated mill and replaced it with a freshly created twin-turbo 3.5-litre V6.
This engine yields 409 horsepower (305 kilowatts) and 479 pound-feet (650 Newton-meters) of torque. Surprisingly, this V6 creates more power – 30 hp and 80 lb-ft extra to be exact – than the V8. It also produces more energy in the low RPMs and delivers better fuel economy.
In some markets, Toyota will also offer 3.3-litre twin-turbodiesel good for 305 hp (227 kW) and 516 lb-ft (700 Nm).
The gasoline engine pairs with a ten-speed automatic transmission, assisting the SUV to hit 62 mph (100 km/h) in 6.7 seconds, not bad for a heavy SUV. That said, we heard the new 2022 Land Cruiser has shed 441 pounds (200 kilograms) and comes with a lowered centre of gravity.
For offroad enthusiasts, the new Land Cruiser features the same old approach angle of 32 degrees but the departure angle can reach 26.5 degrees according to the chosen variant. A four-wheel-drive setup is standard across the range along with three differential locks.
Seeing the list of impressive features, we find the Adaptive Variable Suspension (AVS) and updated electronically controlled kinetic Dynamic Suspension Stabilization (E-KDSS) system. Furthermore, the full-size SUV comes with a more advanced Multi-Terrain Select system, now boasting Deep Snow and Auto modes. The Multi-Terrain Monitor system now has an underbody camera. In addition, an updated Crawl Control system controls the SUV’s speed during off-road adventures.
Expect the 2022 Land Cruiser to accompany standard nine-inch infotainment or an optional 12.3-inch screen. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration, wireless smartphone charging, a 360-degree camera, and a head-up display are also part of the modern features. Owners can also opt for a powered tailgate as well as an electrically adjustable steering wheel, air ionizer, and even a fingerprint authentication system.
The next-gen Land Cruiser is safer to drive thanks to the new Toyota Safety Sense suite comprising adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, adaptive high beam, and more.
Toyota will hopefully start selling the 2022 Land Cruiser this summer in select markets.
