Mazda’s smallest crossover, the CX-3 will be dead next year. While it is not a surprising move, it was always on the cards after the introduction of the CX-30. Both lie in the subcompact-crossover segment, so compete against each other. The new CX-30 is actually more robust, roomier and more fashionable than the old CX-3.
Although the CX-30 is founded on the compact Mazda 3, the CX-3 is built on the small subcompact Mazda 2, which has a significantly tinier cabin compared to most of its rivals. It came as a 2016 model and got very few updates during its lifecycle. The company cut the trim levels to just one lately, hinting at the model’s grim faith.
While not even in the rumours, we believe the CX-30 will be renamed to CX-3 after its abandonment. It would make the naming consistent with the crossover lineup because other utility vehicles have single-digit names such as CX-5 and CX-9.
