Ford has officially announced the name of its first electric pickup truck. What we have been calling the electric F-150 will feature an F-150 Lightning nameplate. The full reveal will happen next week on Wednesday, May 19, at 9:30 p.m. ET on Ford’s YouTube channel. The truck will hit the roads in mid-2022.
Ford CEO Jim Farley gave us some key details. The Lightning will be capable of powering homes, run faster than the supercharged V8 F-150 trucks, and receive over-the-air updates.
The electric truck will boast two electric motors to deliver an all-wheel-drive and cover over 300 miles of range. The maximum Ford offers in the Mustang Mach-E is 305 miles.
The F-150 Lightning will have the same footprint as its gas-powered sibling. There is a brightened light bar extending across the top of the grille, and the “Lightning” emblem fixed on the bedside panel. Expect the cabin to have the latest and bigger displays because the new F-150 comes with a big 12.0-inch screen and digital gauge cluster.
The new Ford F-150 Lightning will go on sale in the middle of next year and compete with the impending GMC Hummer EV pickup, the electric Chevy Silverado, and the Tesla Cybertruck. The company will develop the truck and its batteries at Ford’s Rouge Center in Dearborn, Michigan.
