Big trucks and SUVs featuring electric and hybrid powertrains are far heavier than other vehicles. There is also very little possibility to install bigger tires on them with higher load capacities. Continental knows that very well and has introduced its first passenger tyres with the new “HL” load index code. While having the same air pressure, the HL tires come with greater load capacity than the XL tires.
Customers will find the “HL” load index code mentioned in front of the size on the sidewall of the tire, such as “HL 245/45 R 19 101 Y XL”. Continental set the load capacity at 825 kg (load index 101), which is 10 % more than the XL standard of 750 kg (load index 98).
Passenger tires of this size developed to the SL benchmark, acceptable for various vehicles, can endure the highest load of 670 kg (load index 94). That takes the load capacity of the new HL tires nearly one quarter higher.
Continental had to alter the tire structure and the rubber compound to make HL standard tires. “We were dealing here with tradeoffs that needed resolving at a very high level,” describes Dr. Stefan Habicht. “In terms of construction, we reinforced the bead and enhanced the contour of the tyre to reduce tyre/road noise. At the same time, we also optimised the pattern compound. As a result, we were able to achieve low rolling resistance, ensure precision handling and keep mileage at its customary high level.”
The Continental HL standard tires are presently available for only OE fitments. However, they will soon be accessible in the open market.
