The Chinese automaker NIO has introduced its fourth electric vehicle, the ET7, with up to 150 kWh battery pack (70 kWh and 100 kWh at first) and a self-driving system. The NIO ET7 is the automaker’s new flagship sedan, which is built on the ET Preview concept from 2019.
Batteries, Range, and Power
First thing first, the batteries. The NIO ET7 will come with 70 kWh and 100 kWh battery options, offering over 500 km (311 miles) and over 700 km (435 miles) of range respectively on New European Driving Cycle.
By late 2022, NIO will also start offering a 150 kWh battery version that will be good for over 1,000 km (620 miles) of range.
The sedan boasts a dual-motor all-wheel-drive set up delivering 480 kW and 850 Nm of torque. To make it more efficient, the automaker has installed a permanent magnet in the front and an induction motor in the rear, in addition to SiC power electronics. All the efforts enable the ET7 to sprint from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 3.9 seconds.
Interior and Equipment
The NIO ET7 would provide living room like comfort inside thanks to the smart air suspension, heating, ventilation, and massage function as standard on every seat. Additionally, we can see a glass roof, an innovative dashboard with HUD as standard, a 10.2″ instrument cluster, and 12.8″ center display, plus 23 speakers (as standard). NIO also showed us its “invisible” smart air vents on both front and rear row.
Other prominent facilities include the world’s first UWB digital key (capable of localization at centimeter-level precision), frameless windows, and soft close. The flush door handle pops out automatically as the driver reaches the ET7 and the door will open a little. The doors can shut automatically, as well.
Perhaps, the most exciting thing for enthusiasts at the unveiling was the ground-breaking self-driving tech. The system includes eleven 8MP cameras, LiDAR, and Adam – an NIO Super Computing system. Those interested in using this tech has to go for a monthly subscription for 680 yuan ($105) a month.
“The ET7 features NIO’s latest NAD (NIO Autonomous Driving) technology based on NIO Aquila Super Sensing and NIO Adam Super Computer. NAD brings safer and more relaxing autonomous driving from point A to point B, gradually covering cases such as on expressways, urban, parking, and battery swapping.
NIO has built up the NAD full-stack autonomous driving capability including perception algorithms, localization, control strategy, and platform software. NIO Aquila Super Sensing features 33 high-performance sensing units, including 11 8MP high-resolution cameras, 1 ultralong-range high-resolution LiDAR, 5 millimeter-wave radars, 12 ultrasonic sensors, 2 high-precision positioning units, V2X and ADMS. Aquila can generate 8GB of data per second. NIO Adam features 4 Nvidia Orin SoCs with a total computing power of 1,016 TOPS.”
