The Honda luxury division introduced the updated 2022 Acura MDX crossover two days back boasting loads of new technologies and a new performance Type S model. Those eyeing the updated hybrid variant will be disappointed because the automaker has no plans to continue it for the new model, according to Autoblog.

The 2020 Acura MDX Sport Hybrid carries a 3.0-liter V6 mated to three electric motors generating 321 horsepower (239 kilowatts), which is 31 hp (23 kW) more than what the 3.5-liter V6 offers. It makes the hybrid the most powerful variant in the MDX lineup. However, that’s going to change with the introduction of the Type S model, which houses a turbocharged 3.0-liter V6 churning out 355 hp (264 kW) and 354 pound-feet (479 Newton-meters) of torque, displacing the hybrid as the MDX’s most powerful variant.

While making the Type S more powerful and more convincing, the engineers have added Brembo front brake calipers, a 1000-watt 25-speaker sound system, and 9-mode massaging front seats. Acura plans to introduce the variant by the end of Summer 2021.

While the world is moving toward electrification, ditching the hybrid variant is an odd move. The idea might be introducing a more robust and stylish variant to bump up the sales. That said, the brand could change its mind before the launch of the 2022 Acura MDX.
