Volvo is driving fast toward full electrification. The only model using a combustion engine will be the next-generation XC90. And in the next ten years, they plan to only produce electric vehicles.
The Swedish automaker’s around 20% sale came from the electrified models this year. In the next five years, they are looking to bump this figure to 50%.
“I would be surprised if we wouldn’t deliver only electric cars from 2030,” the company’s CEO Hakan Samuelsson lately said to Financial Times Future. He thinks we need to seize the production of gasoline and diesel engines if we really want people to accept electric vehicles in true spirit.
“The way forward would be to have clear rules on when we need to exit the combustion engine,” Samuelsson added. “Once you have realized that the petrol and diesel engine are really not part of the future, it’s rather easy to see you have to move fast into the new world.”
The plan to go 100% electric was first expressed by Samuelsson at the start of this year. And now, talking to the Financial Times Future, he repeated that not the regulations are pushing the transformation at Volvo.
“Volvo will be very careful and deliver only electric engines before anybody has legal requirements for this,” he added.
