The Italian automaker Lamborghini has switched production from cars to surgical masks and medical shields in an effort to fight against the global coronavirus pandemic. The company is arranging facilities in its Sant’Agata Bolognese plant to manufacture the protective equipment for health care workers on the frontline in Bologna’s Sant’Orsola-Malpighi Hospital.
Workers that usually make the Lamborghini cars’ interiors are producing surgical masks and medical shields. The manufacturing plant’s current capacity stands at 1,000 masks and 200 medical shields a day, created through 3D printers. Once the equipment is ready, the University of Bologna’s Department of Medical and Surgical Sciences will test them before final delivery to the hospital.
Lamborghini and Sant’Orsola-Malpighi Hospital have been cooperating with each other for many years, as indicated by the former’s Chairman and CEO Stefano Domenicali. The executive expressed support for active fighters of the pandemic by reassuring that the company will work together and contribute where necessary to overcome this emergency.
Italy has been the hardest-hit country by Coronavirus and is observing strict lockdown to contain the spread of this pandemic. The Sant’Agata Bolognese headquarter also lights up its building each evening with hues of the Italian flag, to show solidarity with the entire country.
