General Motors has introduced proprietary Ultium Batteries to position itself ahead for an all-electric future. The best thing about these is high energy choices, fast-charge ability, and up to 644 km of range. Although GM didn’t reveal much about the Ultium, they did tell that these batteries have large-format, pouch-style cells that engineers can stack in a horizontal or vertical position. This would allow them to customize and enhance them for different vehicles.
“Thousands of GM scientists, engineers, and designers are working to execute a historic reinvention of the company,” stated GM President Mark Reuss. “They are on the cusp of delivering a profitable EV business that can satisfy millions of customers.”
The GM’s Ultium batteries can offer 50 to 200 kWh of power with Level 2 and DC fast-charge capability. The 0 to 96 km of sprint will be possible in just 3 seconds. The electric motors powered by these batteries can be paired with front-wheel drive, rear-wheel drive, all-wheel drive, and performance all-wheel drivetrains. On the other hand, GM trucks will feature 800-volt battery packs and 350 kW fast-charging capability. GM is collaborating with LG Chem and is working hard to take the battery cell cost under $100/kWh.
GM will use the Ultium batteries on its all-new global platform, which has the capability to spawn trucks, SUVs, crossovers, cars and commercial vehicles.
“Our team accepted the challenge to transform product development at GM and position our company for an all-electric future,” stated Mary Barra, GM chairman, and CEO. “What we have done is build a multi-brand, multi-segment EV strategy with economies of scale that rival our full-size truck business with much less complexity and even more flexibility.”
Chevrolet, Cadillac, GMC, and Buick all will introduce their electric vehicles with the first offering coming from Chevrolet in the form of Bolt EV followed by Bolt EUV. From Cadillac, this year we are expecting debuts of Lyriq luxury SUV in April, followed by Ultium-powered GMC HUMMER EV on May 20.
