Hyundai and Kia may have been behind in the electrification adoption, but they are catching up with plans to introduce thirteen hybrids, six plug-in hybrids, twenty-three EVs, and two fuel cell vehicles in the next few years. This year Hyundai will bring hybrid and plug-in hybrid models of Tucson and Santa Fe while Kia will do the same for Sorento. The Korean automotive giants are also preparing their dedicated platform for EVs due in 2024. However, we will see a dedicated battery-powered EV next year.
Besides, Hyundai and Kia are intensifying their efforts on autonomous driving. In this regard, they have joined hands with Aptive that will help them to commercialize this technology in 2023. The work on SAE Level and Level 5 autonomy is underway, and we will soon be able to see vehicles featuring these autonomous techs.
Hyundai and Kia have made public their plans to spend $87 billion in the next six years for the research and development of new technologies. Hopefully, this money will also be used for the production of a mid-engined sports car, which Hyundai has been teasing for quite some time.
