Lucid Motors brought to us their first electric car, the Air, in 2016 boasting 1,000 horsepower using a 130-kilowatt-hour battery pack and delivering a whopping 643 kilometers range for an initial $60,000 price tag. Sadly, the car that was meant to make debut in 2018 couldn’t materialize due to financial constraints. But after securing $1 billion funding from Saudi Arabia’s sovereign wealth fund, the company started making progress to create the Lucid Air (finally).

In a recent email, the company shared some important details with us, and it has opened its order books as well, which allows interested customers to book the Air sedan for a refundable $1,000 deposit.

“As we near production of the Lucid Air in late 2020, we continue to make great progress here at Lucid Motors,” says an email sent by the firm. “We will be sharing regular updates in the coming months. Hopefully, you have had a chance to read recent articles about our factory, now under construction, and our beta prototypes, now undergoing testing.”

A couple of days back the automaker successfully tested a beta prototype of the Air, which is race-proven.

“This is a new generation of technology,” says CEO Peter Rawlinson. “It embodies all the advances of the last several years, and – in particular – our battery technology is now race-proven.” We can take this claim very seriously because the Air prototype achieved some racing milestones at Laguna Seca and High-speed Oval.

The Lucid Air is still going to wear an initial price tag of $60,000 but the customers taking deliveries of the ‘Air Launch Edition’ have to dole out more than $100,000. This car would feature a 100-kilowatt-hour battery pack delivering approximately 482 kilometers of range.

Expect the Lucid Air electric stand to hit the dealerships in the fall of 2020.
