The startup EV company, Rivian Automotive has introduced a battery, which is 20-25% more efficient than any EV battery on the market. They achieved volumetric energy density through a battery cooling technology and would employ it in the Rivian R1T electric pickup truck, R1S SUV, and other upcoming vehicles from the automaker.

The electric vehicle battery cooling system is the main aspect of improving a battery’s volumetric energy density. Of course, there are other factors too, but this is the key to active temperature management.

Charged EVs, an Electric Vehicle Magazine, took an interview of Richard Farquhar, Vice President of Propulsion at Rivian Automotive, and asked him about their analysis and research on battery technology. He said, “We have what we believe is currently the highest volumetric energy density modules and pack in the world. It’s about 20-25% greater energy density in watt-hours per liter compared to anything on the market today.”

While describing how they have achieved better energy density, he told regarding Rivian’s use of various battery models, each containing two cell layers and exclusive cooling plate setup. Working together, the system manages the heat better, thus is capable of delivering around 644 km of range (400 miles).

The EV company will bring its first vehicle in the market in the last quarter of next year. The startup has received millions of dollars of funding from Ford and Amazon and will be sharing resources and producing vehicles for them, as well.
