Daimler’s Head of Digital Transformation, Sascha Pallenberg said in a tweet today that they have plans to create an all-electric Mercedes G-Class. The actual announcement was made by Daimler CEO, Ola Källenius, at the Automobilwoche Kongress in Berlin.

The CEO also revealed that the company had been discussing ditching the G-Class, the most expensive model in the automaker’s lineup. However, he believes this is the last model the automaker should eliminate.
Apart from being an expensive model, the G-Class is one of the thirstiest gas-guzzlers. It returns 14 miles per gallon collectively. The electric Mercedes G-Class will change all that with zero-emission and more than 300 kilometers range (our good guess).
Once out, the boxy SUV will reportedly sell under the “EQ” banner. The automaker plans to sell all of its EVs under this flag, including the EQC crossover and the flagship EQS – the electric variant of the S-Class.
It is worth noting that the electric G-Class will not be the first of its kind. An Austrian company Kreisel Electric has already transformed the regular G-Class into an electric model. It creates 483 horsepower and goes to 100 km/h in 5.6. Its top speed is limited to 183 km/h.
The EV carries 80-kWh battery packs with support for 150-kW charging. A single charge gives it enough power to complete 300 kilometers.
Although Mercedes did not disclose when they plan to launch their Electric G-Class, we are happy they are not eliminating the SUV and are shifting their focus to save the environment.
