Mazda will take part in the upcoming Tokyo Motor Show to introduce an Electric SUV, a recent video teaser verifies. This Mazda Electric SUV will be a new model in the company’s portfolio, meaning it will not be a part of any existing model lineup.
Seeing the buyer’s recent interest in the sports utility vehicles, Mazda had to bring something interesting to compete in this segment. Reportedly, the automaker will use SkyActiv-Vehicle Architecture that underpins the new Mazda 3. The Japanese automaker does not have a dedicated EV platform yet.
Rumors say the EV will feature a 35.5-kilowatt-hour battery and a single electric motor. It will be capable of producing 142 horsepower and 195 pound-feet of torque.
Mazda previously joined hands with Toyota to work on EV technologies. However, this electric vehicle is a standalone creation of Mazda. The automaker may develop two variants; a battery-electric and an extended-range model, which might debut at the Los Angeles Auto Show. The latter will allegedly house a small rotary engine, which we believe could be a single-rotor 0.33L engine that was part of the Mazda 2 RE Range Extender concept introduced in 2013.
Mazda Electric SUV may reach the market in the first half of next year. However, we do not know about the launch markets yet.
