Hyundai has unveiled a new center console airbag to show the world how serious they are about passengers’ safety. The airbag will prevent collision between the front passengers in case of an accident.

As per data revealed by the European Automobile Manufacturers’ Association, 45% of injuries occur when the front passengers hit each other or other interior components in the vehicle. The center console airbag prevents that from happening. In case of a collision, the airbag pops up and creates a gap between the front passengers, thus minimizes chances of head injuries by 80%, according to a report.

So, how Hyundai achieved this landmark for its vehicles? They created a tether, which holds the lightweight airbag. The automaker did it best to minimize the weight and size; the airbag is around 500 grams lighter than its rivals are.

According to Hyock In Kwon, a research engineer from Hyundai’s Crash System Engineering Design Team, they are not going to stop here. They want to take passenger safety to the next level. Hyundai vehicles are already very safe; however, this addition will enable it to get higher safety ratings from Euro NCAP, NHTSA, and IIHS. Talking about Hyundai’s safest vehicles, some of them include the Kona, Santa Fe, Tucson, and Nexo.
