Introduced as a concept in 2017, the Volocopter Autonomous Air Taxi succeeded another test flight at Daimler headquarters in Stuttgart, Germany. Daimler has already made a $30 million investment in the company.
Earlier they tested the self-driving taxi at Helsinki Airport in Finland. Volocopter took their first test drive in Dubai two years ago. The Emirate is an ideal city to use this service, as the metropolitan is hard to travel by car in the peak time. The air taxi will cut hours of traveling time to just a few minutes.
The Volocopter Autonomous Air Taxi boasts 18 rotors that take energy from the electric motors. The air cab is created to carry two adults over a distance of 27 kilometers. The top speed is limited to 100 km/h. However, the more advanced version would be able to cover 35 kilometers on a single trip at a speed of 109 km/h.
Volocopter did not reveal when they would be fully ready to launch this air taxi. However, Volocopter CEO Florian Reuter believes that time is imminent.
“Our Volocopter air taxis open up a completely new dimension in urban mobility,” he stated. “As Stuttgart has seen today, they fly safely, quietly, and are fast approaching the implementation stage.”
Besides, no words yet from the RTA, when it will be operational in Dubai. In addition, we did not hear about any legislation that certifies the use of these self-driving taxis in the Emirate.
