After introducing the F8 Spider, Ferrari has revealed another convertible, the 812 GTS. Featuring Maranello automaker’s V12 power-unit, the new Ferrari 812 GTS is built on the 812 Superfast coupe with focus on power and performance. In fact, Ferrari says it is their most powerful production convertible on the market. The power comes from the naturally aspirated 6.5L petrol engine churning out 789 horsepower and a huge 530 pound-feet (718 Newton-meters) of torque.
This huge power makes the 812 GTS more muscular than the Chevy Corvette ZR1 (C7) Convertible creating 755 hp as well as the Lamborghini Aventador SVJ Roadster pumping out 759, which also uses a 6.5L naturally aspirated V12 engine.
As said earlier, the focus is on power and performance, and this is evident from the tweaks the automaker made in the engine to create more torque at lower RPMs. The V12 redlines at an inspiring 8,900 rpm, however, the maximum horsepower is available at 8,500 rpm. Moreover, the car delivers 80% of the torque at just 3,500 rpm.
As for any Ferrari, the new 812 GTS is not only fast on its toes but is also furious in the straight-line sprint. The run to 100 km/h just takes less than 3 seconds. Pushing the pedal to its limit can take the car to 200 km/h in 8.3 seconds and achieve a top speed of 340 km/h.
Being a hardtop model, the automaker needed to strengthen its chassis, which had added more weight to the car. It is 75 kilograms heavier than the 812 Superfast. The hardtop takes just 14 seconds to open at a speed of 45 km/h.
The new Ferrari 812 GTS is the second front-mounted V12 Spider regular production model from the automaker. The first one was the 1969 365 GTS4 (also known as Daytona Spider). We did have other droptop models in the last fifty years with front-mounted engines as well, but they all were limited-edition models.
