To ensure the safety of children, Abu Dhabi Police has decided to fit stop-sign cameras. These cameras will ensure that motorists stop 5m away from the bus once the bus driver deploys stop sign. The violators will receive Dh1,000 fine and 10 black points. On the other hand, if the bus driver fails to use the stop sign, he will get Dh500 fine and six black points. This project will make it easier for children to cross the road without having to worry about cars flashing through their path.
Abdullah Al Ghefeli, head of the road traffic studies section of Abu Dhabi Police, announced this as he launched a safety awareness campaign. He said, “The target of the government is to cover all school buses in the emirate and install cameras.” He also mentioned that in the first phase they would install stop-sign cameras in 500 buses and slowly build up the pace to cover 7,000 buses. The project is huge, and so is the cost. Abu Dhabi Police will bear the cost of this project.
As stated earlier, the authorities have also initiated a year-long awareness campaign, which will make sure motorists know about the stop-sign cameras. It will educate drivers about this new development and how they can contribute to making roads safe for all. Abu Dhabi police will run this campaign in English, Arabic, Urdu, Malayalam, and Chinese to make sure everyone understands about road safety regulations.
Al Ghafeli didn’t reveal the exact date to start the installation of these cameras. However, we believe it will not take them much time. Brigadier Suhail Saeed Al Khaili, Director of Central Operations Sector at Abu Dhabi Police, has welcomed this project as an excellent safety measure that was long due.
