Tesla has introduced new versions of Models S and Model X with new drivetrains, improved suspension, and other changes. These additions will enhance the driving range of these cars on a single charge while using the same battery pack. The improvement in drivetrains also brings back the Standard Range version for both these vehicles. The new versions will be accessible once the production cutover takes place.

Tesla made a number of changes to increase the range of Model S and Model X. These include:

  • New front motor – The automaker switched the Induction Motor (IM) with Permanent Magnet (PM) motor on the front axle, which was first produced for the Model 3, ‘giving us a 10% improvement in range’.

“The net effect is more than 10% improvement in range, with efficiency improvements in both directions as energy flows out of the battery during acceleration and back into the battery through regenerative braking. In addition to adding range, power and torque increase significantly across all Model S and Model X variants, improving 0-60 mph times for our Long Range and Standard Range models.”

  • Faster Charging – Tesla has also improved the charge rate for Model S and X. They are now capable of getting 200kW on V3 Superchargers, and 145kW on V2 Superchargers.
  • Fully Adaptive Suspension – The electric automaker has also updated the suspension, which regularly observes driver input and sensors around the car and adapts suitably. It alters ride height according to the road type as well, not only for speed.
  • Constant Refinement – The updated cars also get new wheel bearings and new tire designs for specific models to bump range, ride, and steering.
