Continental, the premium German tire and automotive technology company, has collaborated with Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) to create an eTorque mild-hybrid system that will become part of new Jeep® Wrangler vehicles. The technology includes the liquid-cooled 48-volt Eco Drive that improves performance and fuel efficiency at the same time. This is the first time that this tech is being used in a sport utility vehicle (SUV).
For motorists in the Middle East, the eTorque mild-hybrid system will also be available in the 2019 RAM 1500. The pickup truck’s 3.6L Pentastar V6 recently got a place in the 2019 Wards 10 Best Engine’s list. The truck will make its regional debut later this year.
The hybrid car sales are growing every year. In the next 6 years, we might see most car models getting their electrified versions. The passenger, as well as commercial vehicles both, will grow in the hybrid segment.
Andreas Wolf, CEO of Continental Powertrain stated: “Electrification is a key component of future mobility. Combustion engine and electrification are complementary partners and this combination will result in more efficiency with lower fuel consumption and CO2 emissions. Thanks to the electric 48-volt engine, the driving joy won’t be compromised.”
“The Jeep Wrangler is an iconic vehicle in the automotive industry and is known for its all-terrain driving capability. Once again, it is blazing a new trail with its eTorque system, powered by Continental’s 48-volt Eco Drive”, added Kregg Wiggins, Senior Vice President of Continental Powertrain, North America.
The liquid-cooled 48-volt Eco Drive has the capability to enhance fuel economy and auto-start response (less than 0.5 seconds), offer better start-stop functionality and decrease the noise levels.
