Dubai Police has introduced a new discount system on traffic fines yesterday. Starting from February 6, motorists who do not commit a traffic violation for a year can get up to 100% waiver on their accumulated fines. Major Gen Abdullah Khalifa Al Merri, Commander-in-Chief of Dubai Police stated they have introduced this system to celebrate the Year of Tolerance and urge motorists to follow rules to get a discount.

“In line with the Year of Tolerance, we have this initiative for the settlement of traffic fines in Dubai through which drivers can get up to a 100 percent reduction on their total accumulated existing traffic fines,” said Al Merri.

The beauty of this 100% waiver system is its categorization into four parts. Major-General Mohammed Saif Al Zafeen, assistant commander-in-chief for operations, said: “The driver’s compliance with traffic laws and regulations would be computed from February 6, 2019, with a 25 percent reduction for every three months. If a driver commits an offense before the end of the period, he or she cannot benefit from the initiative and the grace period is recounted from the date of the new violation.”

Major General Mohammad Saif Al Zafein, Assistant Commander-in-chief for Operations, stated the discount system is for vehicles registered in Dubai only. He also said, “The initiative only applies to individuals who own vehicles and does not apply to vehicles registered to private companies, rental offices, and public or private transport companies.”

To make it easier to understand, here is a scenario. If you are a motorist who has been fined before February 6, you are eligible to get a 25% discount on May 6 provided you did not commit any violation during these 3 months. If you choose not to pay this and wait for the next three months to pay your fine without any violation, you can get a 50% discount. Similarly, you will get 100% waiver if you do not break law in 12-months’ time.
