The German automaker introduced Volkswagen Golf GTI TCR two days back. As the name suggests, it is enthused by the TCR race car. The automaker first showed it in concept form at the 2018 Wörthersee Tour in May last year.
Like the concept, it has a 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-4 unit creating 286 horsepower and 272 pound-feet of torque. The power goes to the front wheels through a 7-speed dual-clutch transmission. This is a huge power bump compared to the regular GTI, which only supplies 220 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque.
VW says the Golf GTI TCR will hit 100 km/h in just 5.6 seconds on its way to a top speed of 250 km/h. The drivers will be able to take the TCR to 260 km/h, though.
A few things that make it stand out include a front-axle differential lock, vented brake discs, LED headlights, different drive modes, grippy bucket seats, red cabin accents, and a sports steering wheel. The standard version will wear 18-inch wheels with 19-inch coming as optional. The TCR also offers buyers a bit of modification with black accent package. The exterior package gives side mirror caps, side skirts, front splitter, rear diffuser, and roof-mounted spoiler a dark shade.
Volkswagen plans to introduce it in Europe in the start at a price of $44,350. The regular Golf costs AED 80,594 in the UAE. The German automaker is also working to improve regular GTI’s power output to around 290 hp. If that comes to the market, the appeal to this TCR version will diminish incredibly.
