The 2018 Mazda CX-5 diesel variant hasn’t made its way into the U.S market yet. Although Mazda did not tell when they plan to release this variant, we have finally got the EPA official fuel economy figures for the CX-5 diesel.
The 2.2-liter diesel turbo I-4 engine teamed up with a six-speed automatic transmission powering the two wheels has been rated at 28/31/29 mpg. The same engine when linked to all four wheels drops the mileage to 27/30/28 mpg. The figures are not convincing because they are very close to the petrol-powered version. The petrol variant, which is much larger at 2.5-liters, rates at 25/31/28 mpg.
Moreover, compared to rival crossovers, the CX-5 fares worse. The Chevrolet Equinox and the GMC Terrain both produce much better economy 28/39/32 mpg, with smaller 1.6-liter turbodiesel engines.
Given the size of the Mazda diesel engine, it is no surprise that it produces more power. In other markets, the engine can generate around 173 hp and 310 lb-ft of torque. However, rumors are fueling the possibility that the CX-5 diesel to come in the U.S markets will be even more powerful than the one found in the world market.
There are no details regarding the 2018 Mazda CX-5 diesel release, however, we hope the crossover will be in showrooms by the end of this year. We also don’t know about diesel’s arrival in the UAE. The 2WD 2.0L CX-5 starts at AED 87,750 in the UAE.
