Porsche is celebrating their 70th anniversary of creating quality sports cars with the 911 Speedster Concept. The Speedster has been created in memory of the legendary 365 Model 1 and is expected to go into production at the end of 2019.
Porsche actually started out 87 years ago after the name of its founder Ferdinand Porsche. Until the WWII, they focused on building tanks, wagons, and tractors. It was actually after the end of the bloody war that Ferdinand Porsche’s son Ferry decided to build a sports car. Ferry’s idea came from an earlier Porsche called Porsche 64, which was a 50 hp car at that time. Only three of those cars were built out of which one remained in its true form. Using that car as inspiration, 1948’s 356 Model 1 prototype came into being.
It was this car that started off things for Porsche in the sports car world and on June 8 it completed its 70th anniversary. The new 911 Speedster Concept is a similar chop top style car. The brand-new concept car sits on the Porsche 911 GT3 chassis and wears the body of the 911 Carrera 4 Cabriolet. Underneath its hood, the car has an inline 6-cylinder engine that makes more than 500 horsepower while having a rev limit exceeding 9,000 rpm. The Speedster comes with a 6-speed manual gearbox.
Porsche has designed the 911 Speedster concept to mimic the design elements of the past and the future. The headlights are very similar to the Model 1, the side-mirrors are round, and the roof is manually tucked in and out. Furthermore, the interior is missing all modern amenities, just the very basic stuff is added. Showing the modern element are the seats, the streamlined taillights, and the 21-inch wheels among other things.
The 911 Speedster Concept will be wearing a very high price tag as it comes out of the assembly lines.
