Fasting gives us a lesson of patience but unfortunately, motorists tend to drive faster during Ramadan. We see this is particularly true near iftar and suhour times when drivers speed up to reach home quickly and break their fast with families.
Sharjah Police has been working hard to educate motorists on driving within speed limits but it seems drivers are not listening. Recently, the Police caught two motorists speeding at 231.6 km/h and 214.7 km before Suhour time and iftar respectively.
Sharjah Police has not only started an awareness campaign, they are also giving iftar meals to motorists who somehow can’t reach home for iftar. This is being done to make them stay calm while driving and avoid speeding just to reach home before iftar.
“Every year, Sharjah Police in cooperation with Al Ihsan Charity Association give people iftar boxes during this time, so that we can reduce the number of accidents and traffic fines,” Major Abdul Rahman Khatr, director of communications at Sharjah Police Traffic Department said.
The police have seen most obstructions taking place around iftaar and Taraweeh with motorists parking improperly and jamming the flow of traffic. Major Khatr has advised drivers to drive calmly and not to put your life and the life of others on the road in danger.
