Formula Racing is one of the world’s leading race events with all major sports car marques taking part. Although Mercedes-Benz is already a part of the most prestigious Formula 1, the company has planned to enter the interesting new Formula E through its electric sub-brand EQ. The induction of Mercedes-Benz in Formula E will formally take place by late 2019 or early 2020.
Mercedes-EQ Formula E will not be joining the race alone, another leading German performance brand Porsche will also take part. After the inclusion of these two brands, the roster will have major electric vehicle brands including BMW, Audi, Nissan, Jaguar, Mercedes, Porsche as well as the lesser-known Mahindra, DS, Nio, and Venturi.
“Formula E is a unique series with some very specific challenges for its teams,” Mercedes motorsport chief Toto Wolff said in a statement released Thursday. “We know the level of competition is extremely high and we will approach the challenge with energy and humility.”
Mercedes won’t be jumping directly into shallow water as it already has HWA, its friendly motorsport partner, working alongside Venturi in the ongoing season. In the next season, though, HWA will enter as a customer race team with Venturi. It will also handle Mercedes’ race team in the Formula E.
HWA earlier had its focus in designing, development, and operations of the Mercedes DTM project. But seeing the popularity of Formula E, the team has been completely shifted. Moreover, Mercedes will have a lot of help from their AMG Formula 1 team. They will develop the high-performance electric motors for Mercedes-Benz in Formula E.
