Volkswagen is looking to nurture its electric car line-up with the Volkswagen ID. Surprisingly, the production ID, to be released in 2020, shall bear a resemblance to the ID concept that was showcased two years ago at the Paris Auto Show. This announcement was made in an interview taken on Tuesday by AutoCar from VW chief designer, Klaus Bischoff. In a short statement, he summed up the upcoming electric car.
“The proportions, the design cues and the wheel size are the same as the concept,” he said. “It looks like the show car.”
It is not going to be an exact replica of the concept since the electrically powered doors are too costly to put into production and the side-view cameras are impractical due to privacy issues. The ID holds supreme importance in the house of VW because it is their first electric car to be built from scratch and also the first electric car to be based on the MEB platform. All other electric vehicles produced by Volkswagen once had a combustion engine growling inside them like the e-Golf.
The Volkswagen ID release is imminent since road testing has already begun. It is hoped the powertrain from the concept has been transferred without alterations. The rear-axle single motor makes 167 hp and the battery lasts for about 250 to 370 miles as claimed by VW. Charging from zero to 80% should take 15 minutes.
