Polestar 1 was unveiled to the Chinese public on Wednesday at the 2018 Beijing Auto Show. At the event, the company announced that the coupe will be priced at $155,000 and will be made at its under-construction plant in Chengdu, China. To ease the task of purchasing and maintaining the car, Polestar 1 will also be offered to customers on subscription, however, further details in this regard are yet to be announced. It is expected, the idea will be similar to Volvo Care.
Polestar plans on producing 500 Polestar 1 cars each year with production starting in 2019. The car can be booked by paying $2,500. The company head, Thomas Ingenlath told media that the response has been positive. The Polestar 1 will make its way to most European countries along with North America and China.
The high price is justifiable since the entire body has been built with carbon-fiber. Additionally, it has a 600 horsepower 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine and two electric motors; one at the front and the other at the back. The motors are powered by a 34-kWh battery that gives a 93- mile range.
The flagship coupe will compete against the Porsche 911, Acura NSX, and Mercedes-AMG S65 Coupe. Other models from Polestar will soon follow, with Polestar 2 electric sedan in 2019 and Polestar 3 electric SUV sometime later. It is hoped these offerings will be cheaper and available in larger numbers.
